Last week I went to the Holly Fair. Its held once every year in November and its been going on for 60 years now. While I was there I found some inexpensive gingham fabric and an empty burlap basmati rice bag imported from India. I thought that it would look cute to make pillows out of the fabric and burlap rice bag. When I got back to Los Angeles, a couple of days later I went to the fabric store to pick up some polyester and orange buttons.
Here’s how I made the two pillows:
First I cut the rice bag down the outside of the bag, so I could get two pillows out of them. Next I placed the rice bag on top of the fabric to measure the amount of fabric I needed. I made sure there was about two inches of fabric more than the burlap rice bag so there was enough room to stuff the pillow. The first bag I made had the zipper on the top of the rice bag and the other bag I had to sew buttons on the top. I decided to hand sew the pillows instead of using my sewing machine. It was more time consuming but, I still enjoyed making them. I thought they turned out great.
what do you think about these handmade burlap and gingham pillows?
